Crying Cactus

Well I never said I had a green thumb anyway!  Ok so my Christmas Cactus (or Holiday Cactus as some call it) isn't doing so well.  I am totally to blame here.  Last summer I didn't put her outside to get good sunlight and she barely bloomed during the Christmas season though she did pop a bud or two closer towards February but they fell off before opening.

Like I said, I haven't a green thumb.

I was told that I could leave her outside in full sunlight and she'll do fine on her own, just water her occasionally.

I finally got the smarts to google how to care for her and discovered, much to my surprise, that she cannot be left in direct sunlight but needs filtered light or shade and only water her when she completely dries out.  Ahhh... that explains why this past week she's been outside and her leaves are dropping off like crazy... oh fret not, I transplanted most of the leaves into another pot!  Yup, I discovered that little tidbit over on youtube.

And speaking of youtube, I found this cactus video there... now I'm dead set on getting my girl growing!!!

My mom gave me a packet of carnation seeds a while ago.  I actually forgot I had them.  Not sure if they'll grow though.  I did plant them today in a nice big pot with fresh soil and whatnot but the seeds themselves looked kind of crushed and dried up... like I said, I'm not sure how long I had them.   I also planted about 5 morning glory seeds in the same pot just in case the carnations don't bloom.  I love carnations, they's so pretty.

Hot enough for you?

I can barely stand the heat any longer!  Yup, I'm already complaining about the weather but I think that is pretty much the norm when you live in Canada knowing the weather can change at the drop of a hat.... Just glad I'm not currently living in Southern Alberta today because they've been hit with a SNOWFALL WARNING... yup, they're looking to get 20cm of snow in the next twenty four hours.

Good luck with that!

Saturday Night

Today was the longest Saturday in my history of Saturdays.  Seriously.... I'm pooped.    Time to kick back and watch Teletoon.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

The underwire broke on my bra so rather than risk getting stabbed in the boob by it, I pulled it out, now that bra has no use where my boobies are concerned so it has been recycled.  It is now what I use to hold my cell phone to my head while I am doing needlepoint and my boobs sit in my lap. Now I can talk on the phone without missing a stitch!  How cool is that!!?

A Trashy Blog

I'm not sure when this happened but the city has begun collecting trash in the early morning hours as opposed to the evening.

Once upon a time I recall trash collection would be roughly around 7pm.  It's hard to forget because if you were a motorist you were stuck behind one of them smelly trucks waiting for your chance to make a quick pass on the next intersection.  If you were someone who went to bed early, then you likely lived on the street where your trash was out at 7pm but wasn't collected til closer to midnight.

Well that's not the issue now!

I noticed while on my way to work one night this week, then again on my way home the following morning that the trash along a busy commercial street had already been placed out to the curb for collection.  Ok, doesn't seem like such an issue, problem is, hours later - like oh perhaps nine or ten hours later, the trash was still there waiting for the MORNING PICK UP.  Yup that's right, businesses are setting out the trash when they close up anywhere from six to nine o'clock at night for the morning pickup that takes place after six in the morning.  So that would mean all you can eat buffet for the squirrels, raccoons, skunks, crows, stray cats and other creatures.

What bugs me most about this isn't that the trash is left out so long, but it's on a commercial street that has more than its share of outdoor terraces.  Yup, imagine having a coffee and muffin on the porch of a café with the downwind of trash.

What could be worse than that?  Oh let me tell you... said commercial street is now under construction thus the port-a-john is right there on the sidewalk.  Now, how's about a cup of coffee and a muffin on the porch of a café with the downdraft of port-a-john fumes?

Take 2

This weekend I will be planting the Morning Glory seeds in a nice big deep flower pot on my balcony.  This technically, is take two.  I planted some seeds last year only I put way too many seeds in a really REALLY small pot and the vines that should have grown to a height of 8 feet, only grew to a height of about 8 inches.  Yup, live and learn I say... live and learn.

Mom's Scary Movie

Ok, I am like sooooo distressed right now!  I just read that some "genius" in Hollywood is going to remake the movie Fright Night.

They're going to have Colin Farrell starring as Jerry (the vampire dude).  This is more than just wrong.  It is sooo wong on an epic scale!

This is Mom's scary movie!  They can't remake it!  You see, every time I see this movie in re-run on television, or stumble on a poster of it, I remember that it's my Mom's scary movie.  Now you're probably wondering why I call it that eh?  Well you see, when this movie just came out, Mom and I were watching television and a commercial for the film aired and she said "Oh I'd love to go see that".  So, since it was a Friday night, I said sure let's go!  I took my Mom downtown on the subway and treated her to a movie, a bag of twizzler licorice and a pop.  We sat in the cinema which if memory serves me right, was practically empty since it was about the 7pm showing.  Mom watched a good part of the movie through her fingers because she was huddled into my shoulder with her hands over her face.  I kept asking if she wanted to leave and she said no.  So this is why I call this movie MOM'S SCARY MOVIE.

(watch the original movie trailer below and see why Mom was scared)

Scratch N Sniff

One thing about spring is the lovely lilac bushes or trees or whateverthefrance you want to call em.  I just know they're so pretty, in deep purple, violet, white... and they have that sweet scent that IRRITATES THE HECK OUTTA MY NOSE!

Yup, with the spring season comes allergy season.  I don't suffer too much except for the lilac trees that torture my nose making it itchy and snotty.  There's a couple of such lovely lilac trees near our home and I can't help but walk past them every single day and like a glutton for punishment, I breathe deeply when I pass them because they smell so sweet.  Sometimes I just stand still, close my eyes and take a deep breath and smile... then pull out the hanky and vicks inhaler and get to work on my nose.  It's a small price to pay to enjoy the sweet aroma of these lovely springtime delights.

Mom, Mommy, Mum, Ma, Mother

My Mom is the greatest!  She's like... the greatest thing since sliced bread!  Seriously.  Mom is fantastic.  How she managed to put up with me all these years is simply a miracle in itself.  Mom has the most beautiful green eyes and the prettiest smile and a real contageous laugh. I love her so much!

This blog is dedicated to all the MOMs, whether you're a Mom, a Grandmom, a Great-Grandmom or even an Aunty or Sister who've taken on the "mothering" qualities of making sure we eat, get bathed, get to bed on time, don't eat too much junk to spoil our dinner, do our homework.... you know, stuff like that there that we kids always complain about.  So this blog's for you!

Sold to the chick by the coffee pot

I've got a new addiction brewing.  Actually it's an old addiction rehashing itself in me.

It's EBAY!

Quite a while ago, more like hmm.... let's see... about 7 or 8 years ago, I got hooked on ebay.  Nope, never sold anything on there - that's just too much work!  Seriously, I just purchased some craft supplies, that's about it.

I got scammed more than once!  And you know how that saying goes "fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me"  well, fool me a third time and you may as well arrest me for sending my thugs to give you some licks!   Yup, I got scammed.  I purchased a Precious Moments cross stitch pattern book, sent the $5 American dollars and at that time the exchange felt like I parted with $100 Canadian dollars, but never got the book.

Rule number one:  purchase from a relatively new seller at your own risk!

The next time I got scammed I purchased a cross stitch kit called "Jesus at 33".  I bid, I won, I sent the $10 American dollars and NEVER GOT THE KIT.  I emailed the seller, gave them a negative stinky review calling them thieves, crooks, robbers and the like and still never got the kit!

Rule number two:  purchase from sellers with less than favorable feedback at your own risk!

The last time, well I can't really say I was scammed.  YES I CAN!  I WAS SCAMMED!!!  I purchased a kit "Angel of Cross Stitch" and paid I think just under $15 American dollars.  The kit was shipped quickly because before you know it the mailman was at my door.... WITH HIS HAND OUT LOOKING FOR DUTY FEES! ...  WTF?!! (that's short for What The France).  I paid the mailman only because I desperately wanted that kit.  I later gave less than favorable feedback because I had already paid for shipping to the seller.

That's when I called it quits.

Rule number three:  know when to cut your losses.

Back then I must have made about a dozen purchases if not more.  I recall they included cross stitch kits, felt Christmas stocking kits, a fancy scrapbook (that was when scrapbooking was just starting to take off so finding one in a store for a reasonable price was next to impossible).  I also purchased lots of craft hoops & cross stitch threads.  My stash is still pretty healthy but could use a bit of pimping up so I checked out ebay and stumbled onto some really nice kits for dirt cheap prices (and reasonable shipping).  This weekend I'm going through my craft stash to do a clean out of all the old general supplies I have and will give some to my friends kids, and the rest to the Salvation Army.

Strained Strawberries

I really don't know how babies can eat that junk in a jar.  Sure, they probably have no clue to it's lack of taste because they haven't been around long enough to have anything good to compare it with.

I bought two jars of baby food tonight, one is smashed strawberries and the other is smashed up banana & apple which I presume will taste like apple sauce.  The strawberry I thought for some strange reason would taste like strawberries.

Boy was I wrong!

Ok so you're probably wondering why is a forty something year old woman eating babyfood.  No it's not some made up fad diet.  I just needed a small jar with a good secure lid.  I prefer to buy yogurt in the larger containers now that I've developed an aquired taste for it, so when I take some with me on the go I'd like a jar and a babyfood jar is perfect.  I figured I'd just woof down the dessert and have my jars like ta-da!

I can't begin to describe the taste of the strawberry purée.  blah!

I feel like I should spread it on a piece of toast and wash it down with a cup of hot coffee.  Do babies smile and giggle when they eat these?  I recall my nephew hated the green peas, I mean seriously, on a normal day regular green peas taste kind of bland, I can't imagine how they'd taste all smashed up and shoved in a jar.
