Sleep, Shut Eye, Snooze

Just when I finally got rid of the insomnia spin I was in early last week, I'm constantly disrupted in my sleep.

Last Thursday I had an errand to run so I had to get up early.  Last Friday I went to the hair dresser early to get my hair cut off and by the time I arrived home, it calculated out to me being awake for a full 24 hours!  I had to get up early on Saturday for yet another appointment, and on Sunday for Church.  Just when I thought I could sleep in on Monday morning, some repairs were being done somewhere and all I hard were electric tools.  Same thing goes for Tuesday.

Wednesday I slept like a rock!  Only problem it wasn't long enough.  Sure I got a full eight hours but I wanted more, but I had to get up.  With the weekend right around the corner, I hope to get some real good shut-eye.  I know sleep is very important to maintaining ones health and if I'm trying to get myself healthy, in shape and drop a couple pounds, I need to be sure my body isn't sleep deprived.   

I'm blaming sleep deprivation for the piece of chocolate cake I ate this evening.  Sad, so sad.

Workout Complete.

The problem with the Interval Run app is that it doesn't actually warn you when you are in the last minute or last five minutes of running (unless you are looking at the darn thing).  The audio does tell you when you've reached the middle of the program but that didn't really help me out yesterday morning.

I went for the morning run as per usual, started the app, shoved the ipod in my pocket and off I went.  It's great because as you can see from the screen shot, it tells you when to walk and for how long, and when to run.  It also has audio, that tells you it's time to walk for how long, and then tells you to prepare to run for how long.  A great trainer in my opinion!  However, yesterday morning I was very tired and really REALLY didn't want to get out to run but I talked myself into it (as per the "I Can Make You Thin" hypnosis program I also have on my ipod, I'm a woman obsessed I tell you).  Anyway, I wasn't listening to any music while I ran this morning because it was still dark and I have to be cautious but I had the ipod buds in my ears to hear the prompts from the app.  Away I went, started off walking for 5 minutes, then was prompted to run for a minute, then walk for a minute and a half, and so on and so forth.  Later, it tells me I've reached the half-way point of the workout.  Great, I think to myself, just doing my workout, listening to the songbirds in the trees, and trying to keep my breathing controlled.  Then out of nowhere the app says WORKOUT COMPLETE. 

Huh? 

Already? 

I stop dead in my tracks and yell at the top of my lungs "ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!  DO YOU KNOW HOW FAR FROM HOME I AM!! YOU COULDN'T WARN ME A FEW MINUTES AGO THAT WE WERE NEARING THE END!! 

Yup, I yelled really loud at my ipod because I was so tired and also so far from home when the workout ended.  I know it's not the ipods fault, it's my fault for not turning around, or for not just running around the block over and over but I like a change of scenery when I run, it keeps it lively.  But did I mention how tired I was already (had just gotten off work and really wanted to go to bed but instead chose to do the workout).  Well, now I am glad I did do the workout but next time I'll know that once it tells me I've reached the halfway point, to just turn around and start heading back!  duh!   I can't believe I did that!  Anyway, I feel great and am really motivated to continue on...

Got App?

I got another new app to help me get the most out of my morning run and to help me make my way up to a 5km run without dropping like a fly or coughing up my left lung.

The app is called Interval Run and it cost $1.99 at the robber app store... Oops I mean at the Apple app store. I shouldn't joke though because so far all the apps I have on my iPod are helping me to eat better and to get off my lazy bum and exercise. Feels wonderful! Already lost some flubber and looking forward to losing more! I'm so psyched up!!!

Good To Go!

I usually prefer to have a really big breakfast on Saturday & Sunday mornings because those are the only days husband and I get to sit at the table together in the monring as our work schedules are quite opposite one another.  Usually the big breakfast consists of fried eggs with a slice of cheese folded inside it, a hashbrown, fried chicken bologna or turkey bacon, brown beans and toast with coffee (Ovaltine for him, he's not a coffee drinker).  Yup, that breakfast screams heart attack but we love it those two days a week.

Well, this weekend, I swapped out the fried eggs for boiled eggs.  Had whole wheat instead of white bread and had no turkey bacon but extra beans (great fiber!). 

I got back to jogging on Monday morning.  I ran 2km.  Ok I ran and walked it... pretty much fifty-fifty.  I'm in better shape this spring than I was last spring when I first took to jogging!  I'm so glad to get out there again, to listen to the song birds early in the morning, smell the fresh morning air, and clear my mind with my quiet moment with God and exercise.  I'm not struggling so much with the will-power thing and have stocked the fridge with yogurt for when I get my sweet tooth (the cupboard is well stocked with popping corn for the air-popper). 

I'm feeling good!!

Two Point Two

I LOST 2.2 POUNDS!!!!
Ok, ahhh.... I'm calm. 

I purchased a new digital scale this week and have been keeping track of everything I eat on an ipod app.  Problem with the app I'm using is it counts calories.  Initially I hadn't been concerned with the calorie counting aspect of it then by the next day I was all over it!  Every time I put something on a plate to eat, I checked the calories, added it as a food to the app and then let the calories add up. 

Today I am obsessed with that calorie counter.  Uggh!!!

I know deep down it's not completely accurate because sometimes I'm not taking the exact serving size to the detail but it's pretty much ballpark so it's doing it's job at keeping me from over eating.  I installed another app on my ipod to keep me in tune with eating fruits and veggies, I'm failing miserably in that area so I'll focus more on that beginning Monday. As it seems all the stupid apps start the week on Monday and not Sunday like the calendar does but what can I do.  Besides, the outdoor farmers market opens up  on Monday so I'll be able to buy fresh fruits and a cheaper price than in the grocers.

I got a good deal of physical exercise this week, been walking a lot but mostly for transportation and not for "exercise" but it still burned calories and made my legs ache. 

The green tea has kicked me into insomnia mode thanks to all the caffeine in it but I'm catching up on some rest this weekend.  I've uploaded my ipod with lots of nice smooth jazz instrumentals to help relax me into sleep. 

And there you have it!  Emotionally, I'm excited that I lost a few pounds even if it's just water weight, it at least motivates me to keep going! 

Monday, I'll get out jogging and will take photos with my ipod, if it isn't too foggy or rainy.  Weather calls for sun and warm, but I'll wait til Monday to see what we get!!

Social Media

It used to be that the only way you could have a chat with someone was in an AOL chat room!  I like how social media has evolved over time.

When I first dialed into the internet it was in 1995 with my 28Kbps dial up modem connected to my old Pentium Pro computer that had a huge hard drive size of 2gb and had the upgrade version of Windows 95 (by that I mean it was a layer added to the Windows 3.5 that was already installed, it wasn't actually the whole program!). 

Social media in 1995, in my opinion, was the AOL chat rooms if you were on AOL, or the Usenet message boards.  I believe the Usenet boards have evolved over the years but I haven't been on them in over a decade. 

Gradually I've been introducing myself to a broader aspect of social media.  Except twitter.  I use Facebook - I just signed up at the end of 2011 believe it or not - to keep in touch with family and old friends from school and previous employments, basically just with the people I really know.  But I'm not checking out my friends pages every day or updating my "status" that often either or playing games.  I just can't get into Facebook like I wish I could for some reason.  *shrugs shoulders*  I guess that's just me.  I do enjoy reading my friends pages when I finally get around to it, and dropping a message or comment to them too if we can't get on the phone.  So as much as I find Facebook annoying, it has an upside to it, at least for me it does. 

Flickr & Pinterest, I love these two.  Seems Pinterest took the best feature of Flickr, expanded it and made it into a hit!  Posting your favorites!  I heard that Tumblr is similar but I never used Tumblr though but I intend to give it a whirl.  I don't spend too much time online though, I do have a real life after all.  But social media is a nice way to connect to people with similar interests, like reading, baking, cooking, sewing, gardening, or whatever!  I do take social media to a limit.  Blogger is my favorite absolutely hands down favorite, and I'm sure there's more media outlets I haven't heard of and may eventually get to and try out but for now, I say, don't knock social media just because someone dislikes something about one, unless you try it out yourself you'll never know if YOU like it or not!

Write It Down

I'm trying to take my health and fitness seriously this year and so far I've fallen so far off track it's not funny. But I'm getting back on track. I only fell of because the weather messed me up.  Was supposed to start jogging March 1st but we ended up getting two major snow storms that week! 

Now I'm taking the advise given to me by Marti, and have begun keeping a food journal.  As of Sunday, I've been officially keeping track of what I eat so that I can make any adjustments the next week and so on.  Two days into it and wow, I haven't given up yet, and I also notice that it makes me re-think some of the stuff I want to eat because I know I'll have to write it down.  Certainly makes me feel guilty for just craving something sweet (like a lemon danish or cinnamon croissant).

Tea Time

It seems like pretty much forever since I've done an opinionated product review.  So let me get right to it then.  This week I purchased three different flavors of green tea.  Usually I just drink plain ole green tea (Either the Tetley or Lipton brands as they both are pretty flavorful to me so in that case I go for which of the two happen to be on sale!).  While I was in the market the other day, standing in front of the selections of teas, looking for something different, a change I guess you can say.  I'm not quite a fan of herbal teas, they are an acquired taste in my opinion.  There are many flavors of herb teas that I haven't tried so won't comment on, then there are fruity flavors I did try that are just plain awful to my taste buds (black cherry in particular!) and then there's mint, chamomile, & lemon that I adore. 

Having said all that, I decided on three different green tea selections:
Tetley mint flavor green tea.


Sure the round bags are cute, and the resealable freshness tin is convenient, but let me say, this was a delightful purchase.  The tea is smooth tasting and not heavy on the mint flavor, not cheap on it either, just right!  I paid just under $3 for a tin of 24 bags which I thought was pretty reasonable and yes I would purchase this product again.    Mint tea is good for the digestive system according to some health sites on the internet, and green tea is filled with antioxidants. 

 
 

My next purchase was Tetley Honey Lemon Ginseng green tea.  I already love lemon tea, and I've had a honey, chamomile blend herbal tea as well that tasted pretty nice but ginseng I never had in tea so this was a leap for me.  The flavor is nice, a bit bitter but I guess that depends on how strong the tea was set and I just left the bag in the cup the whole time.  I liked the flavor more when I had the second cup!  Yes, I would purchase this one again.
Lipton cranberry pomegranate green tea was the last purchase I made.  I was reluctant to purchase a berry flavored tea but since it was a "green tea" and on sale for $2.50 for a box of 20 bags, I figured it wouldn't be too much of a waste if I disliked it.  So I gave it a whirl.  First the colour of the tea is a burgundy colour, almost like a red wine, sort of.  I really expected it to be green for obvious reasons!  Anyway, it has a sweet and bitter berry taste if that's even possible.  I found it bitter at first then the longer the bag set in the water, the sweeter it got but not too sweet, just slightly sweeter than the bitterness.  I found it an acquired taste but I did enjoy it. 

Again, cranberries and pomegranates are filled with antioxidants as it green tea itself.   Aside from the health factors of these teas, I found them all to be quite enjoyable.  Usually when I find a tea I enjoy, I don't switch to another brand no matter what the price, I stick to the brand that I enjoyed.  In this case it will be Tetley for the mint & lemon, but Lipton for the cranberry.  I'm not even sure Tetley makes cranberry but who cares at this point, I'm pretty much taken with the Lipton brand at the moment.

Celestial Seasonings also makes a delightful selection of teas.  I am accustomed to purchasing this sampler box that contains five flavors: chamomile, lemon zinger, peppermint, honey chamomile and sleepytime.  I first purchased this box because I wanted the sleepytime tea to relax myself and get some sleep but didn't want to buy a full box.  Since I already love peppermint and lemon I figured this purchase wouldn't be so bad. 
I loved them all!!

The sleepytime had a mellow aroma, I usually sniff the tea first for a bit before drinking it.  I find it does relax me and put me to sleep.  It also contains chamomile and other teas in it's content.  The chamomile is relaxing also and the lemon zinger is so lemony it's like I put a lemon slice in the tea!  I may just have to try some ice tea with this tea bag.   The peppermint tea is so minty!  I love it!  So that was a great purchase.  The box contains five separate packages (one for each flavor) each containing 4 bags.  They also sell boxes of each flavor, but I stick to the sampler pack.  I tried their berry sampler package and that's where I discovered that I really dislike black cherry tea!

After The Binge

Finally the weather around these parts is starting to warm up (and now that I said that out loud look out for a deep freeze! sigh)...  It is my goal to get out and begin jogging today.  I've fallen so far off the healthy wagon it's not funny any more.  I over ate this week.  I craved everything.  Or so it seemed.   

I picked up two packs of green tea yesterday: one is green tea with mint, and the other is green tea with honey, lemon and ginseng.  They both taste rather good.

I really need to detox myself because I feel awful lazy and bloated, but will wait a before doing that.

I also picked up some apples, prunes, and raisins = my favorite snacks that just happen to be healthy!  I also picked up a bag of Quaker Crispy Minis Rice Cakes, the sour cream flavor ones are pretty tasty, low in calories but water retention high in sodium!  Yikes!!!  I'm not sure when I'll go on a fast to detox my digestive system, but at least I'm getting back to eating better, one step at a time for now.

As for the scale, it can stay in the corner for another couple days.

King With Gold

It's beginning to look like I just might get the Starlight Nativity completed! 

This weekend I finished stitching and assembling the King with Gold.  I had to do his treasure chest twice because the first time I followed the photo in the pattern but it looked awful so I restitched it and just outlined the box with gold colour yarn and glued two gold beads at the closure.  I'm pretty satisfied with how he turned out.  He has some difficulties standing on his own but I intend to glue a small piece of cardboard to the bottom of each character....and while taking this photo I realized I'd forgotten to glue his feet to his sandals!

I also completed the Donkey a while ago but only photographed it today.  He's kind of cute.

Waiting On The Weather

It's snowing today. Been snowing since last night actually.  Very annoying since today, March 1st, was supposed to be my first day back to jogging.  I really was looking forward to it too and I would have gotten out there and jogged nonetheless but I don't have winter jogging clothes.  I know now that I should have gone to the sports store and picked up some thermal running gear like most folks around here who jog throughout the winter but I hadn't expected to like the sport as much I it turns out that I do.  So with the stupidity of the groundhog predicting an early spring and also the fact that up until this week our winter was pretty much non existant where snow was concerned, I figured that when March rolled around it would still be a bit cold but drier and lighter in the early morning when I prefer to run but lo and behold the snow came last weekend then again last night and I'm frustrated.  I probably should just get out there and go for a walk in the snowbanks that would certainly strengthen my legs but it's just not the same.   Oh well, I'll just have to wait until it clears up a bit.
